RESIDENTIAL TRASH SERVICE FAQ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Residential Trash Service Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • What is happening with the orange bags?

The Village’s new residential trash contract will eliminate the use of orange bags. Under the new system, residents may use the bag of their choice. Trash is required to be in a bag within the trash cart. Residents may continue using orange bags until they are gone, but they are no longer required.

  • What does the recycling schedule look like?

Recycling collection will continue to occur every other week based on the current schedule.

  • Why are there different cart sizes?

The Village wanted to provide residents with different sized cart options while also encouraging recycling. Households that generate less waste can choose a smaller cart and potentially reduce their costs, while higher-volume households can select a larger cart that better fits their needs. The goal is to give residents flexibility while promoting responsible waste reduction.

  • How much trash fits in each cart?

While actual capacity depends on how items are packed, the carts generally hold:

  • Smaller cart: Approximately 3 standard household garbage bags per week
  • Larger cart: Approximately 5 standard household garbage bags per week
  • How do I request an additional recycling cart?

A limited number of additional recycling carts are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

To qualify for an additional recycling cart, residents must select the 96-gallon trash cart option. Once the available supply is allocated, additional recycling carts may no longer be available.

  • What happens if I don’t select a cart size?

Residents who do not submit a signed selection form by July 31, 2026, will automatically receive a 96-gallon trash cart.

  • Can I change my cart size later?

Yes. Residents will have the opportunity to request a cart size change up to two times a year. The next available option will be in April, 2027.

  • When will the new carts be delivered?

The Village anticipates that carts will be delivered prior to the program start date of September 1. Residents will receive additional communication once delivery schedules and distribution details are finalized.

  • When will the new cart sizes take effect?

The Village anticipates the new cart sizes will take effect on September 1, provided there are no delays in delivery from the manufacturer.

  • What if my household produces more trash than my cart holds?

Residents who consistently generate more waste than their selected cart can accommodate are encouraged to choose the larger cart option.

  • Why is the Village making these changes?

The new contract is designed to provide more flexibility for residents while helping to control long-term costs. It also encourages recycling, reduces overall waste, and aligns the Village’s program with best practices used in other communities.

  • What if I move into the Village after the cart selection deadline?

If you are a new resident moving into the Village after the cart selection deadline has passed, please contact the Village Office. Staff will review available options with you and help ensure your household is set up with the appropriate trash and recycling service.

  • Where can I find updates about the new program?

Updates will be shared through the Village website https://villageofpotsdamny.gov/trash-and-recycling/ social media pages Village of Potsdam Facebook Page and mailed correspondence. Residents are encouraged to watch for ongoing announcements regarding deadlines, delivery schedules, and program details.
