Village of Potsdam Announces Updated Construction Schedule for Downtown Streetscape & Riverwalk Projects

Potsdam, NY — May 6, 2025 — The Village of Potsdam is pleased to share an updated construction schedule for its Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) Streetscape Enhancement and Riverwalk projects.

The Village recently received notice of new permitting requirements from the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), which necessitated adjustments to the previous project timeline to accommodate required review and approval, while minimizing disruption to downtown activities. The updated plan will allow important infrastructure and beautification work to begin in 2025, while also preserving access to key downtown areas for this year’s community events.
Pending all approvals, the project is now anticipated to be completed in two phases:

• Summer–Fall 2025: Construction will focus on Raymond Street and the Sandstone Art Walk between Sandstone Drive and Market Square Mall. Depending on final project costs, some work may also take place on Maple Street. Work is expected to begin in late July or early August and conclude by the end of the 2025 construction season.

•Spring–Fall 2026: Major streetscape improvements along Market and Maple Streets will begin in April 2026 and finish by the end of October 2026.

This news provides more clarity for downtown planning efforts in 2025. The Potsdam Chamber of Commerce’s annual Summerfest festival will be able to proceed in its traditional locations this year – including Market Street, Fall Island, and Ives Park – without the need for alternative venues, as can other events utilizing these locations. Construction in these areas is not anticipated to begin until the spring of 2026.

The Village thanks the Potsdam Chamber of Commerce and the broader community for their continued patience and collaboration as we navigate the approval process and move forward with this transformative investment in the heart of our downtown.
